It could have, according to Red Bull Racing team principal Christian Horner. The Formula 1team’s Mark Webber retired after 30 laps at about the halfway point of last Sunday’s inaugural 2008 Formula 1 SingTel Singapore Grand Prix.
At Turn 13, the junction between the Anderson and Esplanade bridges, Webber’s car suffered a gearbox problem which may have been caused by a passing MRT train. “A tram line runs beneath the track at that corner and it seems as if static from a passing train at the very moment Mark was in the corner passed through the ground,” Horner told British magazine Autosport.
SMRT, which operates the east-west and north-south lines passing through the area, would only say that “SMRT is looking into the matter” when contacted on Friday. tan Yo-Hinn
